For the Capitalism lesson, I introduced you to five critiques people have made of the way capitalism has been practiced in the last two hundred years. The fifth has to do with Environmental sustainability and we will look at it more closely in week 12.
Choose one of the first four critiques and discuss it in a post.
Critique 1: Karl Marx on Worker Alienation and The Division of Labour
Critique 2: Postcolonial criticisms and social equity concerns
Critique 3: Problems with globalization
Critique 4: Shrinking need for human labour
Think of how the ideas made you think, made you feel. How valid they sounded to you. What you agreed with or didn't agree with or were surprised by.
Talk about one of the ideas: how it strikes you. For instance, if you don't fully understand it, ask questions. If you don't think it is accurate or you think it leaves things out, argue with it or criticize it. If you find it persuasive, discuss why it makes sense to you or how you have seen evidence for it in your own experience. If you would like to discuss other critiques you are aware of, you can do that too. Which of the critiques made the biggest impression on you? Why do you think it made an impression? Don't just defend capitalism: the exercise here is to look at strong reservations people have had with it as the most successful system of economic exchange.
